How to Choose a Diecast Model Car Scale: 1:18 to 1:64

By FunCarScale · Collector buying guide

The best diecast model car scale is the one that fits the display you want to build. Choose 1:18 for a larger focal point, 1:24 for a versatile shelf collection, 1:32 for a compact desk display, or 1:64 for a small-scale lineup. Once the scale feels right, choose the car, finish and features you will enjoy seeing every day.

Collector's quick pick

One statement model: start with 1:18. A themed collection: explore 1:24. A smaller desk arrangement: try 1:32. A miniature lineup: choose 1:64.

What does 1:18 or 1:24 scale mean?

A scale ratio describes how a model's proportions relate to the full-size vehicle. At 1:18 scale, one unit on the model represents 18 of the same units on the real car. At 1:24, it represents 24. For the same car, a smaller number after the colon means a larger model.

The calculation is straightforward: model length = real-car length ÷ scale denominator. You can use centimetres, millimetres or inches, provided you keep the unit the same throughout the calculation. This is why collectors talk about scale as a proportion rather than a fixed model length.

1:18 vs 1:24 vs 1:32 vs 1:64: size comparison

Imagine the same car with a full-size length of 4.8 metres (480 cm). Here is how that length scales down. The bars show the relative lengths of this single example car.

1:64

1:18 26.7 cm / 10.5 in A larger centrepiece
1:24 20.0 cm / 7.9 in A balanced shelf collection
1:32 15.0 cm / 5.9 in A compact desk arrangement
1:64 7.5 cm / 3.0 in A miniature lineup

For the same vehicle, 1:18 is about one-third longer than 1:24, and 1:32 is twice the length of 1:64. Different full-size vehicles bring their own proportions: an SUV and a small sports car can have different model lengths even when they share a scale.

Choose a scale around your display

1:18: let one car become the focal point

Choose 1:18 when you want a larger model to anchor a shelf or a dedicated display. The format gives the vehicle's shape a more prominent presence, making it a good direction for a favourite supercar or a gift centred on one memorable car.

Our 1:18 Lamborghini Revuelto combines this larger format with sound and light effects, in Green or Orange. For a Japanese-car theme, the 1:18 Nissan Skyline GT-R R34 offers removable-wheel detail and a supplied wheel set.

1:24: build a collection with a clear theme

1:24 is a versatile starting point for a shelf of sports cars, luxury sedans or classics. It gives each car room to stand out while making it natural to build a group around a brand, era or type of vehicle.

The 1:24 Toyota Supra A80 is a strong starting point for a Japanese sports-car collection. It has sound and light effects, opening details, and Orange, Black, Red or White finishes. A collector who enjoys classic silhouettes can explore our classic car models alongside the wider 1:24 range.

1:32: bring a favourite car to your desk

Choose 1:32 for a compact display that can sit alongside the things you use every day. A small group can still carry a strong theme through matching colours, a favourite manufacturer or a mix of performance and everyday vehicles.

The 1:32 modified Honda Civic Type R brings tuner-inspired styling in White, Black or Red. It is a focused choice for a Honda collection or a desk display built around modified cars.

1:64: create a miniature lineup

1:64 suits collectors who enjoy arranging several small models together. The appeal is the lineup: coordinating finishes, grouping related cars and creating a miniature display with a consistent scale.

Our 1:64 Alfa Romeo Giulia GTAm is a static display model with rolling wheels and a diecast metal body with plastic components. Red, Yellow, Black and Green give you different directions for an Alfa Romeo or small-scale collection.

Look at the model's features as well as its scale

Scale sets the proportions; the product design sets the experience. Compare the body shape, finish, interior presentation and listed moving parts. If you enjoy interacting with a model, look for the sound, light or opening features that appeal to you. If you enjoy a composed display, focus on the silhouette and colour pairing.

For a gift, begin with the recipient's favourite car or brand, then match the scale to how they like to display models. A single larger car, a themed 1:24 shelf and a miniature 1:64 lineup can each make a thoughtful choice.

Common diecast scale questions

Is 1:18 bigger than 1:24?

Yes. For the same car, a 1:18 model is larger. Its length is 24 ÷ 18, or about 1.33 times the length of the 1:24 version.

What scale is a good starting point?

Start with 1:24 for a versatile themed collection, 1:18 for a larger focal point, 1:32 for a compact desk display, or 1:64 for a miniature lineup. The best starting point is the display you will enjoy building.

Can I collect different scales together?

Yes. You can arrange them in separate groups, use a larger model as the centrepiece, or build a display around a shared brand or colour. Keeping each row in one scale creates a more consistent comparison of vehicle proportions.
