Diecast Convertible Roofs: Folding, Removable and Targa Models

A moving roof can make a diecast car interesting to display both closed and open. The mechanism matters: a roof that folds back, a panel that lifts off, and a Targa roof with moving rear glass give you different ways to arrange the model.

For a folding-roof convertible, start with the 1:22 Mercedes-AMG SL63 or the larger 1:18 McLaren 720S Spider. For a removable roof panel, see the 1:24 Toyota Supra Mk4 A80. The 1:32 Porsche 911 Targa offers a smaller model with a movable roof and rear glass.

Which models have a folding roof?

The SL63 and 720S Spider have folding roofs. The SL63 photographs show the roof and rear cover raised, as well as the closed-roof body. The 720S Spider photographs show the roof hinged back over the cabin.

Choose the SL63 if a roughly 20 cm model suits the shelf. Choose the 720S Spider if you want a larger McLaren display: its listed body is 25.7 cm long and 11.7 cm wide. Leave extra room for the raised roof and open doors. Those dimensions describe the model body, not the full space occupied by every moving panel.

How is a removable roof different?

The Supra A80 gallery shows a separate roof panel lifted off the car. This suits an open-cabin display, with the panel kept beside the model. A removable panel works differently from the folding mechanisms on the SL63 and 720S Spider. The Supra is listed at 21.5 cm long, so its 1:24 label alone does not make it shorter than the 20 cm, 1:22 SL63.

A smaller Targa display

The Porsche 911 Targa is listed at 14.8 × 6.3 × 4 cm. Its photographs show the roof panel and rear glass moving above the cabin. Choose it for the Targa body style and smaller footprint. Leave clearance above and behind the model for the raised roof and rear glass.
